Returning to Water expands access to swimming, water safety, and water-based experiences for families who have historically experienced barriers to water access. Rooted in our Play as Prevention approach, the initiative recognizes water as a space for play, development, safety, healing, cultural connection, and family well-being.
Returning to Water includes Swimmerships for families with neurodivergent children, helping families access inclusive and developmentally supportive opportunities for swimming and water play.
The initiative also connects to our annual Water Walking series for prenatal mothers, which creates a supportive space for pregnant people to experience gentle water-based movement, connection, and preparation for birth.
This work is supported by the Coastal Community Foundation, Clara Lionel Foundation and Gullah Swim Academy.
Across these programs, BEE is working to increase water access and safety while creating opportunities for families to reconnect with the cultural, historical, and healing relationships our communities have long held with water.
