SUMMARY:Community Altar + Ofrenda
DESCRIPTION:This event is in honor and remembrance of lost loved ones and ancestors\, offering an opportunity for grieving\, processing\, mediating\, celebrating\, and support. Food and refreshments will be provided. The community altar and ofrenda event is free of charge and all ages are welcome. \nThe remembrance will begin with semi-private and shared space for personal meditation\, in addition to a separate area for art making. \nFrom 6 until 8 pm\, there will be live music and spoken word poetry\, accompanied by art making and traditional Mexican food\, including homemade tamales and aguas frescas. Doula Raquel Washington\, MA will also be offering herbal grief tea. \nThe community is invited to bring copies of photos of their loved ones\, along with recycled bottles and/or any object to create a momento to leave in honor and celebration on the altar\, or ofrenda (offering)\, in Spanish. This expression of love intertwines many indigenous traditions\, including Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrated in México. \nDuring Día de Muertos\, the tradition is to build private altars (ofrendas) containing the favorite foods and beverages\, as well as photos and memorabilia\, of the departed. The intent is to encourage visits by the souls\, so the souls will hear the prayers and the words of the living directed to them. These altars are often placed at home or in public spaces such as schools and libraries\, but it is also common for people to go to cemeteries to place these altars next to the tombs of the departed. \nThis event precedes the BEE Collective’s inaugural Just-Us INDABA: Birthing\, Education\, and Healing Justice Summit on Saturday\, November 2\, 2024 at the International Longshoremen’s Association Local 1422 building located at 1142 Morrison Drive\, Downtown Charleston.

SUMMARY:Quarterly Blessingway - June 2024
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special day of healing and celebration at our Quarterly Healing Centered Engagement Gathering – Blessingway. \nThis free event\, hosted by the BEE Collective\, offers a welcoming space for pregnant and postpartum people to gather\, heal\, and connect. \nBabies and young children are welcome\, and food will be provided. This event is free of charge as a blessing to our community. \nAbout the Blessingway \nThe origins of a Blessingway come from the traditions of the Navajo people\, where it is known as a sacred ceremony that honors and supports the journey of individuals through significant life transitions. Traditionally\, a Blessingway is a spiritual practice designed to bring protection\, good fortune\, and blessings to those embarking on new phases of life\, such as pregnancy and childbirth. \nWhy a Blessingway is Important Today \nIn our modern context\, the Blessingway has been embraced as a way to celebrate and honor the journey of motherhood\, particularly for pregnant and postpartum people. It is an opportunity to provide emotional and spiritual support\, foster a sense of community\, and create a nurturing environment for healing and connection. \nToday\, a Blessingway is especially important as it offers a counterbalance to the often medicalized and commercialized experience of pregnancy and birth. By focusing on the holistic well-being of mothers\, it emphasizes the importance of mental\, emotional\, and spiritual health alongside physical health. This gathering aims to create a safe\, supportive space where mothers can share their experiences\, receive encouragement\, and find strength in the collective energy of the community. \nHealing Activities \nMake Mother’s Healing Tea with Master Herbalist Shanequa Singletary: Begin the day by crafting a special healing tea designed to nurture and support mothers. Learn about the benefits of various herbs and how to create a soothing blend. \nSound Bowl Healing Session with Tiffany Richardson: Immerse yourself in the calming vibrations of a sound bowl healing session. Tiffany will guide you through a meditative experience that promotes relaxation and emotional healing. \nHealing Arts Activity with the BEE Collective Healing Arts Doulas: Engage in a creative and therapeutic art activity led by our Healing Arts Doulas. This session is designed to help you express and process your emotions in a supportive environment. \nMothers Circle: Conclude the day with a circle of sharing and celebration. This is a special time to honor the experiences of pregnant and postpartum people\, offering a space for storytelling\, support\, and community bonding. \nWe look forward to welcoming you to this nurturing and empowering event. Please remember to register in advance to secure your spot \nRegister to Attend\nYou must register to attend this event.

SUMMARY:Farm Day Play & Read
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Play & Read Day for young children! We are delighted to welcome a special guest: children’s author Gwendolyn Wallace. \nDuring this delightful two-hour event\, she’ll read from (and sign) her book Joy Takes Root\, which won the Black Caucus American Library Association’s Best of the Best honor in 2023. The book tells the story of Joy’s first summer in her grandmother’s Moncks Corner garden. In the midst of okra\, spinach\, and strawberries\, Grammy teaches Joy that plants have many uses. Herbs\, for example\, can be turned into medicine. Publishers Weekly called it “moving.” \nAlso on offer: a planting activity guided by the author for children to take home. Space is limited to 30 families\, so sign up now! One (free) ticket per family. \nRegister
