The BEE COLLECTIVE is excited to announce our second annual Water Walking Class series this summer, in partnership with the Gullah Swim Academy. This class is designed to provide physical and mental benefits specifically for pregnant and postpartum BIPOC women.

We have identified Fridays from 6:00-6:45 PM at MLK, Jr. Pool, as the best date and time. Classes will begin on Friday July 12 and end on Friday, August 16. This is a six week series that is grant funded.

Physical Benefits: The buoyancy of water supports the body, reducing stress on joints and the spine, which is especially beneficial during pregnancy. It helps improve circulation, reduce swelling, and maintain muscle tone without the risk of overheating.

Mental Benefits: Engaging in water-based exercise can help reduce anxiety and stress, promote relaxation, and improve overall mood, which is essential for mental health during and after pregnancy.

About Gullah Swim Academy

Gullah Swim Academy, LLC (GSA) is located in beautiful and historic Downtwon Charleston, South Carolina. It was established December 18th, 2021. GSA is a family owned, minority, small business who understands the importance of teaching all but espeically minorities, how to swim and to be safe in and around bodies of water.

Founders, Nicole Ashby, Harleston Ashby, Dr. Meaghen Ashby-Woods, Vincent Ashby Jr., Fenix Gallashaw, Sarah Gallashaw, and Basir Robertson, have dedicated their lives to serving the Charleston community through the world of aquatics. Gullah Swim Academy strives to provide outstanding customer service and an unforgettable aquatic experience.

GSA’s mission is to help individuals learn how to swim, overcome past experiences, build a relationship with the water, and decrease the stagering statistics of drowing in minority populations. We work towards eliminating the excuses given in why minorities don’t swim.

GSA believes it is never too early or too late to learn how to swim. GSA is there to help.
